Banarasi Silk vs Kanjivaram: Which Saree Should You Buy?
Two of India's most celebrated silk saree traditions. But which one is right for you? Let us break down the key differences.
Origin and Heritage
Banarasi sarees originate from Varanasi with 600+ years of Mughal-inspired artistry. Kanjivaram sarees come from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, with roots in the Chola dynasty. Both are GI-tagged products.
Fabric and Weight
Banarasi silk is lighter with a softer drape, comfortable for extended wear. Kanjivaram silk is heavier and stiffer, giving a structured, regal appearance. The body and border of a Kanjivaram are woven separately then joined.
Design and Motifs
Banarasi features Mughal-inspired florals, paisleys, jaal patterns, and buta motifs with gold and silver zari. Kanjivaram is known for temple borders, checks, and motifs inspired by temple architecture like peacocks and elephants.
When to Wear Which
Choose Banarasi for North Indian weddings, Karva Chauth, Diwali, and evening receptions. Choose Kanjivaram for South Indian weddings, temple visits, and traditional ceremonies. At Sanskriti Elegance, we offer both traditions.
